Writing Letters Using Google Drive
A few weeks ago we received letters from a class we Mystery Skyped with. We were very excited to receive these letters and learn more information about Nebraska (where the class is from). This week we have been forming our responses to their letters. Students are working on how to construction a letter with two paragraphs. The first paragraph answers the questions in the letter they received. In the second paragraph students are providing more information about Vermont, asking new questions and telling a little bit about themselves. Students have been typing their letters on Google Drive (through their CSD gmail accounts). Students have learned how to share their letters with me and how to print. Make sure to ask your student about this experience, we are all very excited about this project!
Busy Week in Room 6!
We have many very exciting things going on in our classroom this week. We have been opening 4-5 Flat Stanley packages each day and then hanging information from the packages in the hallway. The next time you are in PPS please stop by and check out our Flat Stanley wall outside of our classroom.
This week we have also been writing letters to our 3rd grade teachers! In our letters we are informing our new teachers what we like to do in school, with friends and family and during our free time. After we find out who our teachers for next year are (on Tuesday) we are going to type our letters using Google Drive and then each student will e-mail their letter to their teacher, hoping for a response! I will be hand delivering the written letters at the end of the school year!
Lastly, we are working hard on finishing up our year end assessments. Sent home on Friday was the unit 12 assessment. Students are working very hard and are doing an outstanding job completing these assessments with a smile on their faces!

Wonder of the Week: Can Plants Grow Without Soil?
I think plants can grow without soil because I heard that if you put cotton balls in a bag with water it might grow. - Addison
I think plants can grow without soil because in the desert there is sand and cactuses grow in the sand. - Amani
I think that plants cannot grow without soil because if they don’t have any soil they can’t grow. - Holden
I think that plants can grow without soil because in the winter if a squirrel buries an acorn and it rains in the summer it might grow. - Charlie
I think plants can’t grow without soil because the nutrients and minerals are in the soil so the plant can’t grow without the nutrients and minerals. - Madelyn
I think that plants cannot grow without soil because the roots can’t go down into the ground without soil. - Emma
I think plants can grow without soil because bamboo grows in rocks and other things. - Lucas
I think plants don’t need soil because if it rains they grow fast and if it’s sunny they grow less fast. - Norman
What a Plant Needs to Survive
In science we have been learning all about plants. Today we learned about the basic needs of plants, what plants need to survive. Students learned that plants need four things to survive: wind, water, soil and the sun. After we discussed the four needs of plants each student created a four-flap book, each flap represented one aspect of what plants need to survive. Below are some photographs from our lesson today.
Ms. LaRose (times 2) Visits our Classroom!
A few weeks ago my sister (Hillary) came in to meet the wonderful students in Room 6 and to ask for their help with a special project. Hillary works for Homeland Security and she just moved into a new building. The building was in need of some artwork. She asked the students if they were up for the challenge of creating artwork that could be hung in the building. Hillary read a book about coming to America to give students an understanding of what her job entails (approving visas) and what type of artwork they could create to hang in the office. We had a great discussion on what it meant to be American and what non-Americans need to do to become citizens. After Hillary read the book students created rough drafts of the artwork they would be creating with Ms. Vella in art class. Ms. Vella was wonderful and students worked on their artwork for two weeks with Ms. Vella. This past Friday the artwork was complete and Hillary came to collect the pieces of art. We had a small celebration followed by a thank you treat from Hillary. Below are some pictures of our time with Hillary and the artwork we created.
