Flat Stanley's!

The children in Room 6 at PPS have been reading a funny book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brow. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished “as flat as a pancake” when a bulletin board falls on him.  Stanley is very, very, flat, but otherwise fine.  The story goes on to tell how Stanley discovers some real advantages to being flat.  He can slide under doors, go through sidewalk grates, and even fold himself up small enough to fit into an envelope and be mailed to California for a vacation.

Today, each student created their own Flat Stanley. Tomorrow we are going to send our Flat Friends all over the USA and a few may even become world travelers. Students (with the help of family members) have selected a “host family”. We are asking that each "host family" tells us about their Flat Student’s vacation with them. We are hoping to get back new information about each host family’s city and state. We would also love it if our host families took pictures with their Flat Stanley and sent them back to Colchester, Vermont.

We will be using our blog to keep everyone updated as to where our Flat Students have traveled and what they have been doing on vacation.

Wonder of the Week: Why Do We Have Homework?

Why do we have homework?
  • I think we have homework because it helps us get better at the skills we are learning in school. - Addie
  • I think we have homework because if we learn something at school then we get to practice it for homework. - Charlie
  • I think we have homework because we can skip a grade if we work really hard. - Holden
  • I think we have homework so we can learn and practice more things than we learned in school because we would have to stay in school even longer if we didn’t have homework. - Devin
  • I think we have homework because the things that you learn in school are repeated on your homework and you can be better at it when you do your tests. - Rylee

What are the benefits of homework?
  • I think one of the benefits of homework is it helps you get better at what you failed at at the beginning of the day. - Leah
  • I think one of the benefits of homework is that it teaches you more of what you learned in school that day. - Amani
  • I think one of the benefits of homework is to help you move on to the next grade in school. - Addison

Is there such a thing as too much homework?

  • I think there is not such a thing as too much homework! The more the better! - Sam
  • I think there is such a thing as too much homework because if you have too much homework you might not be able to do the stuff you wanted to do when you get home and you might not be able to eat dinner! - Nick

Alaska PicCollage

As we wrap up our study of Alaska we asked students to created a digital representation of one new thing they learned. We have been focusing our study around the question “How do geography, environment, climate and culture affect daily lives of people?” For this project, students focused on what they have learned about Alaska over the course of this unit of study.  Students then looked for photographs which represented their area focus in texts.  After finding a photograph students used the Pic Collage app to create a visual that combined the new information they learned with the photograph they have selected. Look for the finished products on your students’ blog soon!

Ready, Set, Run

We are very excited to be offering the RunVermont Ready, Set, Run program again this Spring! This program helps children learn about and practice fitness, good nutrition, citizenship and goal setting all while having fun and being safe. We will be meeting once a week after school on Wednesdays from  3:00 - 4:00 starting on April 15th.

The program costs $30 and includes a lot! Participants receive a t-shirt, medal, finisher’s certificate and other cool handouts. Students who participate are also invited to come to the RunVermont Spring fun runs: Champ on Church Street and Spring Festival of Fun at the Catamount Family Center in Williston.

There are many scholarships available for this program. Please contact one of the leaders if you would like more information about this.
