Pinky and Rex and the Mean Old Witch

Today we finished our unit of study on Characters.  This week in our reading workshop we read the book Pinky and Rex and the Mean Old Witch.  In this book the characters Pinky and Mrs. Morgan go through a character change.  As a class we created a graphic organizer that showed both Mrs. Morgan and Pinky at the beginning of the book, the turning point (the event that caused change) and Mrs. Morgan and Pinky at the end of the book.  Students used pictures and information from the text to write a constructed response.  Our graphic organizers and students' work will soon be hanging outside our classroom - come take a peek!  After students finished their responses we had a culminating activity.  Students made healthy breakfast bars while I read aloud Pinky and Rex Get Married.

Balance and Motion

We have been having a wonderful time exploring balance and motion! Last week students experimented with balance points and counter weights while trying to balance a paper crayfish on only one finger! This week we continuing to use counter weights while attempting to balance arches and triangles in stable positions.

Students have also been practicing Writing like Scientists! We have been using phrases like I observed… The evidence shows… I predict… and I noticed… Students are learning that when they make a prediction or a claim they must back it up with evidence or observations. Our science notebooks are really coming along!

Make sure to ask your student about their hard work in science!
