How Big is a Foot?

Today in math we read the book How Big is a Foot? by Rolf Myler.  In this book the king decides to have a bed made for the queen's birthday.  He marks off the dimensions of the bed with his feet and gives them to the head carpenter, who gives them to his apprentice.  When the bed is delivered it is too small.  The apprentice must figure out why this happened.  As a class we discussed why the bed in the story did not turn out to be the right size.  We talked about how a teacher's foot is a different size than a student's foot.

After the read aloud students discussed that a foot-long ruler is 12 inches.  Students then worked with a partner to measure objects around the classroom.  Students had to estimate how many feet they believed the object was and then they measured the object.  Below are some examples of students’ work.
