Reading in a Series

Monday’s Reading Workshop mini-lesson focused on how readers use what they know about familiar authors/Characters to make predictions about the book. We have many series books in our classroom and many students have found an interest in the variety of series books the classroom has to offer.  One great thing about reading in a series is that students become familiar with the authors writing style and the characters in the series.  We discussed how the character Fox from the Fox series is always causing trouble and up to no good.  One reason why many students in the class enjoy reading Fox books is because they always know that something exciting and adventurous is going to happen with Fox.  Other series that students are familiar with and had schema (prior knowledge) about are:

Amelia Bedelia – Amelia is always making mistakes

Danny and the Dinosaur – Danny and the dinosaur go on lots of adventures together

Nate the Great – Nate is always solving mysteries

Magic Tree House – Books in this series always go back in time

Dairy of a Wimpy Kid – Rowley and Greg are always getting into mischief

Geronimo Stilton – Geronimo goes on lots of adventures

Flat Stanley – Stanley travels to different places
