Monday, January 29th

Today in math we collected data based on how many pockets students were wearing. We organized the data using a tally chart. We then used the tally chart to create picture and bar graphs.

Today in reading workshop we worked on identifying the topic, main idea and support details in a text. We learned that the topic is usually found in the title. The main idea is the important part in the text and the supporting details are the important details usually found in the middle of the text.

Red Clover Books

This week our class has the opportunity to explore the library's selection of Red Clover books.  During Reading Workshop students can select a Red Clover book and choose to read the book independently or with a partner.  Below are some photographs of students enjoying the Red Clover books.  Click here for more information about Red Clover.  ​

Fruit Food Group

This week in Project Block students learned about the fruit food group. Students learned that fruits are high in Vitamin C which helps heal cuts and bruises. Students brainstormed all of the different fruits they knew. We also explored new fruits such as blood oranges and pomegranates. We also learned any food item with a seed / seeds is a fruit therefore cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, avocados, etc. are all technically fruits even though we commonly refer to them as vegetables.

Special Visitor

We had a very exciting day in Room 6 on Friday when Mrs. Plunkett came in to help us make community paper. We then used the community paper to make a special holiday gift that will be sent home with students later next week. A big thank you to Mrs. Plunkett for coming in to help us with the project and to spend the morning with us!

Writing Workshop

Today in Writing Workshop we brainstormed topics that we are experts on. Students then went to their "tiny topics" notebooks and wrote down all of the topics they are experts on. Students will be using these topics to writing their informational texts on. Some students published what they are experts on to their Seesaw accounts. Reading Workshop

In Reading Workshop we have been comparing text features in fiction and non-fiction texts. Below are the anchor charts we have created as a class during our mini-lessons. 

Our Busy Week

We have had a busy week in Room 6.  Below is a recap of the exciting activities we have been completing.

During Word Work we explored two new apps -- Word Cloud and Magnetic Letters.  Students practiced spelling their Red Words with these apps.  In addition, students learned how to take a screen shot of their work on their iPads and upload the photograph from the camera roll to their Seesaw accounts.  Make sure to check your child's Seesaw account to see their wonderful work.  

In Reading and Writing Workshop we thought about ourselves as characters and how, "You are the main character in the story of your life".  On Monday, students brainstormed character traits that described themselves on paper.  Later in the afternoon students learned how to used Google Documents to type up their character traits and print them.  On Tuesday, students cut out their character traits.  On Wednesday, students used oil pastels and water colors to create their self-portraits.  Yesterday, students glued their self-portrait and character traits to a large piece of paper.  Student work will be on display in the hallway during conferences.

In math we completed the remaining lessons in Unit 3 and took the Unit 3 post assessment.  Today students completed the Unit 4 pre-assessment.  In addition, we had our Character Unit celebration this afternoon along with 4-Winds.

Our Week in Review November 6th - 10th

Counting Up and Counting Back

Today in math we learned two strategies for subtracting: Counting Back and Counting Up. For the Counting Back strategy students learned to put the BIG number in their head and count backwards.  For the Counting Up strategy students learned to put the smaller number in their head and to count up to the larger number.  Students also learned that when the numbers are close together it is easier to use the counting up strategies and when numbers are far apart it is easier to use the counting back strategy.
