The Amazing Mr. MacAuley
On Wednesday the amazing Mr. MacAuley came in to help us kick off our Project Based Learning Project! All second grade students voted on what they wanted to plant in their classroom raised bed and our class is excited to plat -- eggplant, which I was very excited about! The other 2nd raised beds will include tomatoes, bell peppers, basil and a surprise in the last raised bed! Mr. MacAuley came in and taught us about how to get our egglant started; we used seed pods, seed and soil to start the process. To help the eggplant grow we put the seedpods under our classroom grow light. We really appreciate Mr. MacAuley coming in to help us with this project. Mr. MacAuley will be in many more times to help us through two more transplants and to check on the plants. In addition, we would like to send a huge THANK YOU to Claussen’s who continues to support our Project Based Learning project with the donation of seeds, soil, seed pods, their greenhouse and compost -- WOW -- that is a lot of donations!

Room 6 Book Review -- Rikki Tikki Tavi
We read the book Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. The main character is a sneaky mongoose named Rikki Tikki Tavi. My favorite character was Rikki Tikki Tavi because he is brave. The book was about a mongoose trying to kill two cobras because they cobras were trying to take over the garden. Our favorite part was when Rikki Tikki Tavi went into the den to fight Nagaina. To find out what who won the fight you will need to read the book.

Cafeteria Review
Our cafeteria review lesson began with students brainstorming. Students answered the question “What we should include in our review?” Below is our anchor chart. After brainstorming we began writing. We started with focusing on the background information (location, type of food and menu choices) and then moved on to food type, atmosphere and service. Below is our review. We will be adding our recommendation tomorrow!
PPS Cafeteria Room by: Room 6
Have you ever eaten lunch in the PPS Cafeteria located in Colchester, Vermont? If not, we are going to tell you all about it. The Cafeteria serves a variety of food from pizza, to mac and cheese to chicken nuggets to tacos. Our class favorite on the menu is Domino pizza day which happens every Wednesday!
When you walk into the PPS cafeteria you will see long tables. You get to sit wherever you would like. At times it can be really loud in the cafeteria and hard to talk with your friends. The nice part about ordering lunch at PPS is that you don’t have to wait long for your food, you move through the line quickly. On pizza day the lunch ladies ask you if you want pepperoni or cheese. Ms. Hayes is really nice and helps to tell you what line to go in. However, we are going to warn you -- watch out for Mr. Pecor he might steal one of your Pringles!
Comparing Informational Text to Fiction
This week we completed reading Meerkats (an informational text) and Rikki Tikki Tavi (fiction). After finishing reading each text we completed a Venn Diagram comparing the two text. Below is the Venn Diagram from our mini-lessons.

Alaska Research
Before vacation Reading Workshop student did research on Alaska. Students worked hard researching facts and taking notes on what they learned about Alaska. Students then created an "All About Alaska" book where they applied their new learning using the app Book Creator. Students have demonstrated great understanding of the skills they have learned about informational texts over the past trimester.
